Doll-A-Day 204: Mork by Mattel

I had originally planned a review for today, but for two reasons I'm going to put that on hold for another day. One reason is that I'm starting out so late to even begin it. The other is that we're all still pretty shocked around here to hear of the death of Robin Williams, since we were away and only heard yesterday,so in honour of Robin, today we're looking at the Mork doll, made by Mattel in 1979.

Robin Williams was an organizer of, and participant in, Comic Relief, (to aid the homeless), an Oscar winning actor, husband, and father. He quite literally 'burst' onto the scene in the 70's as a comedian and the star of Mork and Mindy.(The character originated on an episode of "Happy Days", of all things.) He was wild, manic, energetic, and hilarious, but also seemed gentle somehow.

He was a classically trained actor who attended the prestigious Julliard School, but made his first impression as a stand up comedian.

He won his Academy Award for the 1997 film "Good Will Hunting".
His space suit could use a cleaning.

The Mork doll was one of two Mork and Mindy 9" dolls made by Mattel in 1979, the other being Mindy.

Both dolls used the bodies originally used for the Sunshine Family dolls, so, unfortunately, no Nah-noo nah-noo hand sculpt.

His original boots were a gray version of the Sunshine Family dad's brown boots.

The facial likeness to the actors, especially Robin Williams, was very good though.

The Mork doll came with a talking space pack, which he wore on his back like a back pack. It operated with a pull string and said several of Mork's famous phrases.
Mork and Mindy was extremely popular and Mork merchandise of all kinds was everywhere.(My niece, who was a toddler at the time, had a Mork t-shirt.)There was also a stuffed talking Mork doll, and a small action figure that came in Mork's egg shaped space pod.
  See you tomorrow.
